Punjab: Congress leader Chaudhary Jagjit Singh passes away

A senior Dalit leader of the Congress party and former minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh has passed away following a cardiac arrest Tuesday morning. He was 81.

Chaudhary had complained of chest pain late Monday night and was admitted in a private hospital where he passed away this morning at around 6:00 am.

Chaudhary was considered a senior Dalit leader who won five of the seven times he contested from Kartarpur assembly segment of Jalandhar district. He served as Local Bodies minister in Captain Amarinder Singh’s government between 2002 to 2007 and was considered to be one of his close confidants. He lost two elections continuously in 2007 and then in 2012.

Chaudhary Singh was also facing trial under a high profile city centre scam in Captain Amarinder Singh’s government.

His brother, Santokh Chaudhary, is at present Member of Parliament from Jalandhar and nephew Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary is the president of youth Akali Dal Punjab. The cremation date is yet to be decided by the family.
